Public Film Event on Hikikomori

We designed and held a three-part film event about mental health aspects of hikikomori, a syndrome of social withdrawal. Over 160 members of the public participated in the film screening, lecture, and discussion forum. Our survey results found that participants, especially those from an Asian background, were more likely to encourage professional treatment for social withdrawal behavior. Such events may be a creative way to improve mental health awareness and treatment-seeking.
