Development of a Cross-nationally Validated Scale of Modern Depression and Hikikomori

Award Type: Research Grant
Funding Agency: Pfizer Health Research Foundation (Japan)
Role on Project: Co-Principal Investigator

"Modern-type depression" is a form of dysthymia while hikikomori is a form of prolonged social withdrawal. Standardized tools to reliably assess and measure these phenomena have not been developed. To do this, we recruited over 330 participants from both clinical and non-clinical sites in Japan. We are designing and developing a cross-national scale of modern depression and hikikomori in order to assess psychometric properties, including reliability and validity of both scales.
